Legarda one of the most qualified to be Senate President, some senators say
As speculations rise on who should be the Senate President in the 19th Congress, returning Senator Loren Legarda’s name has also cropped up.
Legarda is one of the frontrunners in the May 2022 senatorial elections, ranking second in the race, based on partial and unofficial count from the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
Among those who consider Legarda fit for the Senate leadership post is Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto.
According to Recto, he also believes Legarda is one of the most qualified to be the next Senate president in the next Congress.
So far, Legarda would be the most senior among the senators that would comprise the new Senate.
As a three-term senator, she is also the first female senator who became majority leader and chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance.
Some senators also privy to leadership talks also believe Legarda is more charismatic and a very hardworking lawmaker, aside from being known and respected by different sectors in the country and abroad.
Earlier, Senate President Vicente Sotto III highlighted the qualities that the next Senate leader should possess, having served nine (9) Senate presidents in the past before becoming one.
Earlier, Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa expressed his belief Senator Cynthia Villar could also be the next Senate president.
Villar will also be one of the senior lawmakers in the Upper Chamber in the upcoming 19th Congress.
However, Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel “Migz” Zubiri said any talk of leadership change is “premature at this time.”
By tradition, Zubiri said the Senate will decide and elect their Senate leaders and officers in due time and in a democratic manner.
