Zubiri: A dozen of independent senators anticipate incoming Marcos administration

Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said the 24-member Senate has a bloc of almost a dozen independently elected senators who are looking forward to working productively with the new administration for the good of the Filipino people.

Zubiri, a re-electionist, has made it to the "Magic 12", based on the partial and unofficial tally of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for the May 9, 2022 senatorial election.

Amid rumors of a possible creation of a Senate super majority in the incoming 19th Congress, Zubiri said he is choosing to focus on his current responsibilities as Senate Majority Leader, as he helps shepherd the 18th Congress to a close.

After the grueling three-month political campaign leading to the May 9, 2022 elections, the Senate and the House of Representatives will resume regular session on May 23 to act on pending legislative matters.

Both legislative chambers will also perform their responsibilities as the country’s National Board of Canvassers (NBC) that will proclaim the winners of the May 9 presidential and vice presidential races.

The Senate and the Lower House will then go on a sine die adjournment on June 3.

“By tradition, we in the working majority will decide and elect the officers and leadership in due time. This will be done in a democratic manner, based on qualifications and values that will uphold the traditions of the Senate as an institution,’’ Zubiri stated.

“There has been a circulating story regarding a new super majority in the incoming 19th congress. To address the different questions of the media as to whether I will continue to be the majority floor leader, I think it would be presumptuous of me to make this assumption at this point in time, as we are still awaiting the official proclamation of the Comelec,’’ he said.

“In the mean time, there is still much work to be done. We are still in the middle of a pandemic and we must focus our energy on current challenges the country is facing,’’ he pointed out.

“By tradition, we in the working majority, will decide and elect the officers and leadership in due time. This will be done in a democratic manner, based on qualifications and values that will uphold the traditions of the senate as an institution,’’ he added.
