Cebu City police brace for Friday the 13th protest

CEBU CITY -- Police here are gearing up for a massive protest that is set to take place on Friday, May 13.

The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) said that various militant groups will converge at the Plaza Independencia and will march to the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) office.

Lt. Col. Maria Theresa Macatangay, spokesperson of CCPO, said the CCPO is making preparations to ensure that the protest will be held in an orderly manner, and that the police will be there not to prevent the militant groups from expressing their sentiments.

Macatangay appealed to the protesters not to make unnecessary actions that may disrupt the flow of traffic or destroy public or private properties.

“Hopefully, they will just abide by the existing laws and ordinance should their plan to hold the rally push through,” said Macatangay.

Macatangay also advised the groups to ensure that they have the necessary permit for the planned activity.

“If they fail to do that, the police will be constrained to advise them to disperse. If we are responsible citizens, we should heed the directives of the authorities,” Macatangay said.
