Padios leads PH's pencak silat campaign, advances to gold medal round

Francine Padios led the Philippines' campaign in pencak silat after barging into the final of the women's artistic seni tunggal event in the 2021 Southeast Asian Games at the Bac Tu Liem Gymnasium in Vietnam Tuesday, May 10.

Padios, a silver medalist in the 2019 edition, outclassed Thai foe Nurisan Loseng in the quarterfinal before surpassing home bet Vuong Thi bing of host Vietnam by a slim margin en route to the gold medal round.

She is now assured of at least a silver medal finish for the country.

The trio of Jefferson Rhey Loon, James El Mayagma, and Rick Rod Ortega yielded to Indonesia's Anggi Faisal Mubarok, Asep Yuldan Sani, and Nunu Nugraha in the team artistic regu category.

The Filipinos earlier bested the Malaysians before advancing to the semifinal.

Edmar Tacuel, who was the reigning artistic senior's gold medalist, was booted out earlier in the elimination round after being outclassed by Brunei's Abdullah MD Suhaimi.

Brothers Alfau Jan and Almohaidib Abad, men's doubles silver medalist in the 2019 Philippine edition, were also eliminated and absorbed defeat at the hands of champion Malaysian duo Sazzlan Yuga and Mohd Taqiyuddin Hamid.

Indonesian tantem Ririn Rinasih and Riska Hermawan outshined the performance of Filipinas Jeremae Beato and Jude Jalandoni in the women's artistic ganda event.
