Here's what Elizabeth Olsen thinks about people viewing MCU films as a lesser form of art

‘I do think throwing Marvel under the bus takes away from the hundreds of very talented crew people.’

Earlier this month, Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures premiered its latest addition to Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” The sophomore movie about the former Sorcerer Supreme depicts Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) as he goes on an adventure in different universes and tries to put a stop to Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch’s (Elizabeth Olsen) rampage to be with her sons again.

While how the film went has divided many, what viewers cannot deny is how powerful Elizabeth’s performance in the movie, making her one of its ultimate stars that took the film franchise to another dramatic level. This theme has been recurring in many MCU movies, but critics still can’t help but view the film as a lesser form of cinematic art. Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese called MCU films “not cinema” in his interview with Empire Magazine in 2019.

“Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well-made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks,” the director said. “It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

In an interview with Independent, Elizabeth shared her point of view about the notion and how belittling their work takes away the effort and dedication put in by the crew that created them.

“I'm not saying we're making indie art films, but I just think it takes away from our crew, which bugs me. These are some of the most amazing set designers, costume designers, camera operators. I feel diminishing them with that kind of criticism takes away from all the people who do award-winning films that also work on these projects," the actress said.

“From an actor's point of view, whatever, I get it; I totally understand that there's a different kind of performance that's happening,” she continued. “But I do think throwing Marvel under the bus takes away from the hundreds of very talented crew people. That's where I get a little feisty about that.”

In the past, MCU movies such as “Iron Man” films, “The Avengers,” “Doctor Strange,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” among others, have received Oscar nods for their visual effects. In 2019, Marvel Studios made it big with “Black Panther” gaining a Best Picture nomination.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is now showing in the Philippines.
