Capiz governor Contreras loses re-election bid, graciously accepts electorate verdict

ILOILO CITY -- Governor Esteban Evan “Nonoy” Contreras II of Capiz province lost his reelection bid in Capiz where former 2nd District Representative Fredenil “Oto” Castro has been declared winner.

“The election is over. I respect the people’s decision,” said Contreras as he graciously accepted the electorate’s verdict last Monday (May 9).

Contreras lost by 100,000 votes to Castro, who campaigned under the Lakas Christian Muslim Democrats banner.

With 98 percent of election returns, Castro garnered 249,622 votes while Contreras got 149,315 votes.

“Let’s move forward and help our beloved province,” said Contreras in a speech.

“I am very grateful and to all Capiznons for giving me the chance to serve Capiz as the people’s governor,” added Contreras, who served for a three-year term.

In 2019, Contreras beat then incumbent governor Antonio “Tony” Del Rosario when he split from the ruling Liberal Party (LP) that dominated provincial politics for decades.

But Contreras’ three-year stint as governor is marred with frequent clashes with key LP politicians, especially elected members of the Capiz Provincial Board.

For instance, Contreras met stiff opposition from the provincial board when he was asking the passage of a budget intended for boosting the response of the provincial government against Covid-19.

The latest of those clashes came when the Capiz Provincial Board limited the scope of the calamity fund that can be used for the post-recovery of areas affected by the flood brought by tropical depression Agaton.
