UAAP eases restrictions for student-athletes declaring for PBA Draft

The UAAP has allowed student-athletes in their final collegiate playing year to declare for the PBA Draft despite the tournament still ongoing.

UAAP executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag assured that the student-athletes "will be allowed to join the draft without fear of being disqualified" for the players to remain focused with the postseason.

The PBA, for its part, extended the draft application to May 7 while the draft proper kicks off on May 15 at Robinsons Place Manila.

"The dangers to be avoided wala na. It really serves the best for student-athletes who do not have to wait for another year," said Saguisag.

The UAAP, Saguisag said, will be reaching out to PBA commissioner Willie Marcial and deputy commissioner Eric Castro for further discussions.

"Pro-athlete kami rito. Tulungan na talaga moving forward," added Saguisag.

At press time, Ateneo, University of the Philippines, De La Salle, and Far Eastern University have completed the Final Four cast in the UAAP and the semifinals will be played most likely next week.

No UAAP athlete, however, has thrown in their name in the draft yet while PBA aspirants can withdraw their application until May 13.

"No need to withdraw right now (for UAAP athletes). The managing directors have recommended it. The Board of Trustees have already approved it and we will come up with a formal resolution para wala nang takot ang ating mga student-athletes."
