PAGASA: Some parts of PH expected to experience above-normal rainfall due to La Niña

Some parts of the country are expected to experience above-normal rainfall due to La Niña until July 2022, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Sunday, May 1.

“Inaasahang magpapatuloy ang epekto ng La Niña sa ating bansa hanggang July 2022 (The effects of La Nina are expected to continue in the country until July 2022),” said PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja.

This means that many areas in the country will possibly experience above-normal rainfall in the next three months, he explained.

“As for our rainfall forecast for the month of May, mayroon pa ring (there is still) above-normal rainfall dito sa (here in) Bataan, Occidental Mindoro, Negros Oriental, Siquijor at ‘yung mga kalapit pa nitong mga lugar (and its nearby areas),” Estareja said.

“Ibig sabihin kung ano ‘yung nararanasan nilang pag-ulan for the month of May nitong mga nagdaang taon ay mas higit sa normal ‘yung mararanasan for this May 2022 (It means that the rainfall that they have experienced for the month of May in the past year will be more than normal this May 2022),” he added.

Some of the factors that can possibly cause above-normal rainfall in the said areas are the “start of the southwest monsoon in the last week of May, and worst case is a low-pressure area or storm.”

Per PAGASA, the rest of the country is expected to experience near-normal rainfall.

La Niña is the cooling of sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific and is characterized by above-normal rainfall.
