PH ready to welcome Ukrainian refugees—DFA

The Philippines stands ready to accept Ukrainians seeking refuge from the ongoing war in their country, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Thursday, April 7.

As both countries commemorate their 30 years of diplomatic relations since 1992 on Thursday, the Philippines through the DFA reaffirmed its commitment to assist Ukrainians amid the war.

"In keeping with its long tradition of providing humanitarian assistance, the Philippines stands ready to welcome Ukrainians seeking refuge from the war in their country," the DFA said in a statement.

The Philippines also pledged US$ 100,000 to help in the humanitarian efforts for Ukraine through the United Nations (UN).

"The Philippines pledged USD100k contribution to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs' Humanitarian Flash Appeal for Ukraine," the DFA said.

Last month, the Philippines expressed its full support for the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) order to Russia to immediately suspend military operations in Ukraine.

“he Philippines notes the Court’s pronouncements of its profound concern about the use of force by Russia and the continuing loss of life and human suffering in Ukraine,” the DFA then said.

“In this regard, the Philippines takes this opportunity to reaffirm its full support for the International Court of Justice, the principal judicial organ of the United Nations,” it added.

Prior to this, the Philippines also condemned the invasion of Ukraine after voting "yes " to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution on Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.

It also called on concerned parties to resort to the 1982 Manila Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of International Disputes, saying that “it will at least halt the ongoing tragedy for a while.”
