1 million votes pledged by an alliance of educators for Leni-Kiko tandem

A group composed of more than 600 professionals and workers in the education sector as well as several education workers’ unions, organizations, and associations, pledged one million votes for the candidacies of Vice President Leni Robredo and Senator Kiko Pangilinan in the 2022 May elections.
“Angat Buhay-Edukasyon" (ABE) formally launched its organization on Thursday, April 7, by endorsing the presidential and vice-presidential bids of Robredo and Pangilinan.
ABE is a movement of faculty, non-teaching personnel, workers, and education students from various universities both private and public.

Dubbed “1M for Leni-Kiko and the Education Sector,” the launch was held at the Ateneo de Manila University and live-streamed through social media.
The group’s endorsement of the Robredo-Pangilinan ticket was based on their pro-education platform, according to ABE lead convenor and Ateneo associate professor Gary Devilles.
Devilles explained that the ABE is also working with other groups such as Teachers for Leni, Tutors for Leni, and the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) to craft an education covenant with the tandem.

The covenant would include the promotion of the rights and welfare of teachers and much-needed reforms in the sector.
Meanwhile, National Artist Virgilio Almario also graced the launch of the group. ABE convenor Rowell Madula of De La Salle University moderated the launch and the open forum.
Groups of educators supporting Robredo’s candidacy that are based in different universities also expressed their commitment to the “1M pledge.”
Other speakers included Vernon Totanes of the Ateneo Rizal Library, Jonas Angelo Abadilla of the University of the Philippines Diliman Student Council, Bernardo Sepeda of Lasallians for Leni, Emmanuel Gonzales of Tamaraws for Leni, and Emer Gonzales and Maria Victoria Bongar of Thomasians for Leni.

ABE, Devilles said, will hold more events in the upcoming weeks in preparation for the elections.
For Devilles, the education sector plays a significant role in the elections because of the “widespread disinformation and historical distortion that have plagued” the campaign period.
