PCG's new multi-purpose vessel undergoes successful sea trial in Japan
The future BRP Melchora Aquino (MRRV-9702), the second 97-meter long multi-role response vessel of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), has departed for her first sea trial in Japan ahead of her scheduled delivery in May.

The PCG announced Wednesday, April 6, that the 97-meter MRRV was successfully launched sometime last month at the Shimonoseki Shipyard in Yamaguchi, Japan for her initial shakedown cruise.
A sea trial is being conducted to gauge the readiness or worthiness of a watercraft, and is considered as the last phase of a water vessel’s construction.
“Naging ligtas at matagumpay ang naturang inisiyatibo na layong suriin ang kahandaan ng naturang barko bago tuluyang lumayag pauwi ng Pilipinas sa susunod na buwan (It was a safe and successful initiative which sought to test the readiness of the ship before it sails back home to the Philippines next month),” the PCG said.
The MRRV-9702 is the sister ship of MRRV-9701 or the future BRP Teresa Magbanua, which was already delivered last February 26.
Like MRRV-9701, the MRRV-9702 has a maximum speed of 24 knots and endurance of 4,000 nautical miles. The two vessels are the biggest acquisition of the PCG in terms of size to date.
PCG Commandant, Admiral Artemio Abu said in a previous statement that the delivery of the two MRRVs will bost the capabilities of the Coast Guard in safeguarding the country’s maritime territory.
The two MRRVs are expected to be used in patrolling the 37,000-kilometer long coastline of the Philippines, including the areas in its exclusive economic zone (EEZ) such as the West Philippine Sea, Philippine Rise, and the southern part of the archipelago.
The two MRRVs were procured by the government from Japanese firm Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. for JPY14.6 billion or around P7 billion as part of the PCG’s Maritime Safety Capability Improvement Project (MSCIP) Phase II.
