QC resumes free maintenance medicine program for senior citizens

The Quezon City (QC) government resumed its free maintenance medicines program for all senior citizens on Tuesday, April 5.

The pilot run for the relaunch was held on Tuesday in key areas in the city’s six districts - Toro Hills Covered Court in Barangay Bahay Toro for District 1; Barangay Commonwealth Plaza for District 2; Pansol Plaza Covered Court in Barangay Pansol for District 3; Amorsolo Covered Court in Barangay UP Campus for District 4; Barangay Sta. Lucia tennis court for District 5; and Servants of Charity in Barangay Pasong Tamo for District 6.

The local government started the distribution of the medicines at around 8 a.m. until 12 noon targeting 250 senior citizen per district per day.

Registered senior citizens should present their QC ID or their existing Office of the Senior Citizen Affairs (OSCA) identification cards and will undergo risk assessment, vital sign check-up, and laboratory before they will be given prescription for their medicines.

The city will provide maintenance medicines for hypertension (Losartan 50 miligrams (mg)/ tab, Amlodipine 5mg), diabetes (Metformin 500 mg), and for high cholesterol (Simvastatin 20 mg/tab) for the seniors.

The program was based on the City Ordinance No. SP-2892 authored by Councilors Franz Pumaren, Donny Matias, and Imee Rilllo, which was implemented in December 2019.

District 1 Health Officer Dr. Karen See said that if the medicines needed by the senior citizens are not available, they will be referred to the Social Services and Development Department (SSDD) for medical assistance.

Aside from the program, the city also designated spaces in the areas to assist the senior citizens to process their QC IDs, as well as for Covid-19 vaccinations.
