Jerome Lorico presents bold urban wear with new collection 'Speculo'

After presenting his take on the future of protective gears, Jerome Lorico, the fashion designer behind the label Lorico, introduces his latest collection at the Panasonic Manila Fashion Festival 13 reflecting his view on what is currently happening in the world. Titled “Speculo,” which in Latin means “mirror,” Jerome presents a series of elevated pieces “that twists and follows the bizarre and rustic spirit of certain Filipino culture.”
“As a creative, I believe we have a certain kind of sensitivity towards what is happening around us,” Jerome tells Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “It gives us the ability to translate the energy or mood surrounding us into something that is tangible. ‘Speculo’ is like a social commentary about what is happening in the world, in our country, and within us.”
A chic commentary that is. His urban wear designs are more like modern armor in black and white. The designer played with different materials in making the collection. Sportswear aesthetic is merged with utilitarian vibe in his runway show. A glimmer of skin is courtesy of his designs in sheer. Also seen on the virtual runway are his bag designs completing the runway show that almost feels like a march toward the future.
“In the beginning, the pandemic proved to be a hindrance in the creation of the collection,” Jerome says. “But over time, I got used to it and the work it entailed served as an escape from the stress of the pandemic. I’ve discovered that staying creative helps us go through any kind of challenge.
“In a world where we can be passive about the things happening around us, the collection invites us to be more receptive and to be open to what is part of our reality now,” he continues. “To be more observant, proactive, and understand truths about the world and the people around us.”
