Folayang's muay thai win at ONE X gives him much-needed charge

In recent years, Eduard Folayang has kept hearing the same thing over and over – that he should hang up his gloves. 

But a resounding victory at ONE X two weekends ago has now drowned out such chatter. 

“Landslide” felt relieved after beating John Wayne Parr in their legend-versus-legend Muay Thai match at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. 

Filipino MMA fans are some of the most passionate in the world, but they can be unforgiving at times, especially when their favorite fighters go through a rough patch.  
 

The Team Lakay icon hinted there was pressure to prove those critics wrong. 

“I think one of the things that I was looking most forward to was getting my momentum back,” he said.   

“Of course, there were a lot of things going through my head leading to the bout. Especially, if I went on and lost that one. I expected many would be calling for my retirement once again.”  

Instead of letting the naysayers affect him, the 38-year-old used those taunts as motivation to put out one of his best performances in a long while.  

“I guess that’s part of it,” the former World Champion said. “You really can’t take that away from Filipino fans, but I saw it as a challenge and did my part.”   

And play that role he did. He engaged Parr in a memorable three-round scrap, which saw him dominate the first two rounds before surviving a late flurry from the legendary Australian.   

The result convinced Folayang that he has more choices now, as he called out Sage Northcutt for another Muay Thai match. He even welcomes an MMA clash with Yoshihiro Akiyama. 

Whatever happens next, one thing is certain – the Team Lakay veteran still has a lot left in his gas tank.   

“I think my performance in my last fight is a good gauge to where I am right now,” he added. 

“It helped me regain my confidence, and this will push me to become a better martial artist moving forward.”
