Poll watchdog Legal Network for Truthful Elections (Lente) called on the youth on Monday, April 4 to refrain from using the term "fake news" to identify false information and instead use other terms such as "misinformation", "disinformation" or "malinformation".

"Wag na kayo gagamit ng fake news. Wag niyo na gagamiting terminolohiya yan (Don't use the term fake news. Don't use that terminology anymore," Lente Executive Director Ona Caritos said.
"Kasi antithesis yang dalawang word na yan (These two words are the antithesis of each other)," she added.
Caritos explained that news has to be true, and if the word "fake" will be affixed to it, it no longer becomes news.S he said that they should use terms such as misinformation, disinformation, or malinformation.
According to her, misinformation is the sharing of false information with no malicious intentions while disinformation is the opposite. Malinformation on the other hand, is sharing of true information but used in the wrong context.
Caritos made the statement during the launch of the "Series of Information Drive on Responsible Voting of the Youth and 2022 Elections" at the Marikina Convention Center in Marikina City.
Lente said that it is in partnership with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Commission on Elections (Comelec), and the National Youth Commission (NYC).
According to Lente, the event aims to empower the Filipino youth and encourage them to participate in deciding for the future of the country.
Comelec spokesperson Director James Jimenez also led the demonstration of the use of a Vote Counting Machine (VCM) for the youth during the event in relation to the upcoming May 2022 polls. They were taught it works, how to vote using the ballots, and the process that occurs afterwards.
