Raffy Verano and Tyler Tio showed their veteran presence and provided the spark in Ateneo's 70-53 drubbing of Far Eastern University in the UAAP Season 84 men's basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Thursday night, April 28.

The Blue Eagles are just a win away from another elimination round sweep and an outright ticket to the Finals as they prepare against second-seeded team University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons on Sunday, May 1.
A sweep would easily propel the Katipunan-based squad to the Finals in a stepladder format. Ateneo remained unbeaten in 13 straight matches and rolled to its 39th win since October 2018.
Verano led all scorers with 17 points on a 7-of-11 shooting to go with 13 rebounds while Tio waxed hot from beyond the arc and finished with 14 points built on three triples along with four rebounds and three assists.
Despite the victory, Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin lamented his wards' performance and lauded Tamaraws mentor Olsen Racela for giving them a tough challenge.
"I didn't think we played well today. I'll just say it outright off the bat," said Baldwin. "But I think FEU had a bit to do with that. They defended us tough. They used some schemes that gave us some problems and we didn't really adjust right throughout the game.
"Our defense was good. But I also think FEU missed some open shots too so I think the game could have been closer if they had hit some open shots."
The Tamaraws had a dismal shooting, hitting 17 of their 68 attempts from the field which totaled only to 25 percent.
The Eagles stepped on the gas in the third quarter to lead by as many as 17 points heading into the payoff period, 51-34.
FEU managed to trim the deficit down to 11 in the last quarter but Verano and Gian Mamuyac connived to rebuild another 18-point cushion, 63-45.
Ateneo never looked back at that point as Forthsky Padrigao, who was just playing time in the waning seconds, hit a booming triple to close out the night.
RJ Abarrientos paced FEU with 12 points and five rebounds while Ljay Gonzales had 10 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
The Morayta-based team, tied at fourth with National University at 6-7, will be needing a desperate win against neighbor school University of Santo Tomas on Sunday to keep its Final Four hopes alive.
