Teachers seek Comelec's position on onsite reporting during election break

A group sought the reaction and official position of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on the orders for physical reporting of teachers during election break.

The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) on Thursday, April 28 wrote a letter to Commissioner George Garcia regarding the matter.

“The DepEd Central Office has yet to release a clarification on this, but several schools division offices have ordered the onsite reporting of their teaching and non-teaching personnel, while some instructed their teacher not to report, a clear sign that there is indeed a confusion,” TDC National Chairperson Benjo Basas said.

“We were also informed that beginning May 2, schools that will be used as polling places will be secured by the Commission after the final testing and sealing of vote-counting machines (VCMs),” he added.

In a Facebook post on April 18, DepEd said that classes at all levels in public schools nationwide will be suspended from May 2 to 13 in preparation for the activities related to the May 9 national elections.

However, this DepEd directive was opposed by another teachers’ group for being “mechanical, unreasonable, and counter-productive.”
