Ranking solons welcome signing of Marawi siege compensation law

House leaders hailed Malacañang for enacting on Wednesday, April 27 the Marawi Siege Victims Compensation Act.

"We applaud President Rodrigo Roa Duterte for signing the Marawi Siege Victims Compensation Act into law, which is a priority legislation of the 18th Congress designed to help Marawi residents rebuild their lives and pave the way for the city’s full recovery," House Speaker Lord Allan Velasco said in a statement Thursday, April 28.

"Through this new law, we hope to see the return to glory of this once beautiful city and its people back on their feet. We also hope to ease the burden of those who lost their properties and loved ones during the war by providing them just compensation," he said.

The Marinduque lone district congressman branded the law as one of the "important legacies" of the Duterte presidency and the 18th Congress.

"Thus, we call upon our next set of leaders to the proper enforcement of this law so that we can achieve our goal of seeing Marawi rise again sooner rather than later," added Velasco.

For his part, Deputy Speaker and Basilan lone district Rep. Mujiv Hataman thanked on Wednesday President Duterte for signing the measure, which he called "very good news".

"Malaking bagay ito para sa mga kababayan nating taga-Marawi na halos limang taon na naghintay ng tulong para makapagpatayo ng bahay nilang nasira ng digmaan, makabili ng gamit na nasira at maibangon kahit papaano ang kabuhayan na nawala (This is a big boon to our countrymen in Marawi, who for almost five years have waited for aid so they may rebuild their homes, replace their belongings, and somehow revive their livelihood)," he said.

"Hindi man natin maibalik kung ano ang nawala, malaking tulong pa rin ito sa buhay ng mga kapatid nating taga-Marawi (Although we won't be able to recover what we've lost, this is still a big help to our Marawi brethren)," added Hataman, who for the past few years has championed the rehabilitation efforts of the city.

An estimated 1,000 ISIS-inspired Maute Group terrorists occupied Marawi City in Lanao del Sur on May 23, 2017. The Philippine military drove the terrorists out after a grueling five-month battle that left the Islamic city in shambles.

The Duterte administration has been trying to fix Marawi ever since.
