'Avatar 2' is set to bring viewers to Pandora's underwater world

Finally, the sequel to the 2009 epic science fiction film is upon us

After 13 years, James Cameron’s follow-up movie to the 2009 epic science fiction film “Avatar” gets its title. Disney announced during CinemaCon in Las Vegas that the forthcoming movie is dubbed “Avatar: The Way of Water” and is set to premiere globally on Dec. 14 and in North America on Dec. 16.

The second film of the “Avatar” franchise takes place a decade after the events of the first movie and it introduces viewers to Jake and Neytiri's family, “the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure,” according to its synopsis.

For the new movie, James pushes the technological boundaries of filmmaking. Apart from its heavy visual effects, “Avatar: The Way of Water” merges underwater filming and performance capture by recoding the movements of its actors submerged.

“With the first 'Avatar,' we set out to push the limits of the big screen. With the new 'Avatar' films, we're pushing those limits even farther, with 3D, with high dynamic range, with high frame rate, higher resolution, and a much greater reality in our visual effects,” the Oscar-winning director said in an interview with EW.

Stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will be reprising their roles as Jake Sully and Neytiri. While Edie Falco, Michelle Yeoh, and Kate Winslet join them in the new film.
