'The best candidate?': VP bet Sotto reacts to rival David's endorsement of him
Vice presidential candidate Senate President Vicente Sotto III is grateful to fellow vice presidential bet Rizalito David for endorsing him for the second most powerful position in the country.
‘’I would of course be grateful to Lito David because I know him for being very religious and very conservative person. Thank you very much for the endorsement,’’ Sotto replied during a press briefing during the Ormoc City campaign swing of the Lacson-Sotto tandem Wednesday, April 27.
David is the running mate of presidential candidate Jose Montemayor Jr., a physician and a lawyer. Montemayor is with the Democratic Party of the Philippines (DPP).
Sotto is chairman of the conservative Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).
It was independent presidential candidate Senator Panfilo Lacson who first answered the query on David’s endorsement of Sotto by saying ‘’Ako na sasagot (I will answer that), he is really the best there is.’’
‘’Kaya imagine a vice presidential candidate endorsing another vice presidential candidate. He (Sotto) must be the best,’’ Lacson underscored.
Asked whether David should now withdraw as there are less than two weeks left before May 9, 2022 national and local elections, Lacson said: ‘’Well that is his decision. Withdrawal is personal decision.’’
‘’Kaya nga kami napipikon kapag pinagwiwithdraw (We get annoyed when we are asked to withdraw). Yung withdrawal iwanan mo sa tao. Huwag mo i-suggest (Let the candidate decide whether he should withdraw or not. Don’t even suggest it),’’ he added.
Queried whether vice presidential candidates should unite, Sotto said that is not his and Lacson’s mentality.
‘’We are not running because we want to defeat somebody eh. We are running because we want to offer the country a better program and a better way of running the affairs of the government on a national scale,’’ he explained.
‘’We have been a ika nga (so to speak) very close to main issues besetting our country on a national scale,’’ he added.
Sotto reiterated their campaign position that they know the country’s problems and know the solutions as well.
‘’Kaya inooffer namin ang mga sarili namin na para ika nga magawa namin ang pagso-solve dito sa mga problema na ito (That’s why we are offering ourselves to be able to work out solutions). Gaya ng sinasabi ko kapag inupo kami hindi kami magpapractice on a national level, hindi kami mangangapa (As we have said, when we are elected, we would not be groping for solutions, we know the solutions),’’ he added.
‘’We know what we are doing. We will hit the ground running on day one. Ganun eh (That’s it). So we are not running just to defeat someone else. Baka sila kasi kami ang nauna eh (We are the first to offer solutions) Kami nauna (We are first). Agosto pa lang nakaready na kami (We have been ready since August) and we are ready with our program. It's something that we have seen for the last 24 years,’’ he added.
