PSMID encourages public to get vaccinated vs flu, pneumonia

The Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (PSMID) has encouraged the public to get vaccinated against flu and pneumonia.

The group is monitoring possible uptick in flu and pneumonia cases, said PSMID Adult Immunization Committee Co-Chair Dr. Faith Villanueva. Currently, the incidence of flu and pneumonia in the country remains low, she noted.

“Even if we see a decrease in the number of flu and bacterial during the pandemic time, it does not mean that we should not go and get the flu vaccines for ourselves because now that we are opening, we are easing out, the numbers for flu and secondary bacterial pneumonia can actually go up again. So, better for ourselves to get protected from them by getting the vaccines,” she said in a media forum hosted by the Department of Health (DOH).

“So, ang babantayan natin ngayon now na Alert Level 1 (what we will be monitoring now that we are under Alert Level 1), people are going out and more people removing the face shield but they maintained the mask, people are interacting more, people are grouping/meeting more---ito yung babantayan natin (this is what we will be monitoring) in terms of the uptick in flu and in the uptick in bacterial pneumonia,” she added.

Villanueva said that the health protocols related to Covid-19 played a vital part in keeping the low number of cases of both flu and pneumonia in the country.

“There are several explanations there, basically during the pandemic time we were all wearing our face masks, we were wearing our face shields, we were staying at home,” she said.

“It prevented exposure to these pathogens mainly because of the masking, the distancing, and the staying at home,” she added.
