Woman held for child's death, to undergo 'postpartum depression' test - QCPD chief
The woman who allegedly killed a two-year-old girl in Barangay Culiat, Quezon City last Thursday will be examined by a psychiatrist, Quezon City Police District (QCPD) director Brig. Gen. Remus Medina said on Friday, April 22.
“Posibleng dumadaan sa tinatawag na postpartum depression ‘yung babae, so ipapa-determine natin sa expert natin. Isa-subject natin for examination ‘yung babae (It is possible that the woman is going through what is called post-partum depression, so we will have it determined by our expert. The woman will be subjected to examination),” Medina said in a media interview.
According to the police, members of the QCPD Holy Spirit Station (PS 14) immediately went to the New Era Hospital on Thursday, April 21, around 11:30 p.m. after they received a call from the hospital’s security guard about a child being treated for multiple injuries.
The victim was brought to the hospital by her guardian and suspect, Rowena, 37, a resident of Brgy. Culiat. The child later died due to body injuries.
Medina said that during police questioning, Rowena admitted that she committed the crime.
Lt. Col. Mark Julio Abong, QCPD Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (CIDU) chief, said that the mother of the victim, an overseas Filipino worker in Libya, entrusted the child to Rowena.
He also said they were able to talk to the spiritual leaders of the suspect and the Muslim community that contacted the child’s mother.
“With our conversation with the spiritual leaders and elders po ng kanilang community, we got words na ‘yung ina po ay pauwi dito, pabalik, para siya po ang mismong magbigay ng permission or consent para ma-subject sa thorough forensic examination ‘yung katawan ng bata (we got words that the mother is going home for her to give permission or consent to subject the child's body to a thorough forensic examination). What is clear right now is that the victim died from multiple causes,” he added.
Medina said that they want to determine if the suspect did the crime due to postpartum depression since she just gave birth eight months ago. Her child was also rescued by the CIDU in a follow-up operation.
She will also undergo a drug test.
Abong said the suspect, who is currently under police custody, continuously cried as she admitted the crime.
“Kung ano man po ‘yung magiging admission niya , siyempre hindi naman po pupwedeng manggaling lamang po sa kapulisan, kaya po kami ay makikipagtlungan sa Integrated Bar of the Philippines ng Quezon City para po maassistihan itong ating suspect at magabayan siya sa kung ano man po ‘yung pag-amin na gagawin niya (Whatever her admission will be, of course it should not just come from the police, so we will work with the Integrated Bar of the Philippines in Quezon City to assist our suspect and guide her in whatever confession she will make),” he added.
Medina reminded the parents not to just entrust their children to anyone and encouraged the Muslim community to report to their office if they witness this kind of incident.
The suspect will be charged with murder in relation to the Republic Act 7610 or the Special Protection of Children against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act, the police said.
