Conti’s Bakeshop and Restaurant, known for its mouthwatering cakes, dessert, and savory meals, collaborates with a non-government organization to spread hope and delight to Filipino families living in off-grid communities.

While many people turned their lights off in observance of Earth Hour, Conti’s chose to honor the day by providing sustainable lights to poor families living in a far-flung area.

A portion of the sales of the newest Conti’s cake, Chocolate Blush, on that day was donated to Solar Hope, an NGO engaged in bringing solar and sustainable solutions to marginalized communities in the Philippines.

This allowed the customers to participate in the good cause simply by purchasing Conti's Chocolate Blush cake – truly a double treat for the customers. The proceeds were enough to provide solar home kits to 29 families in Barangay Magatta in Manggahan, Laiban in Tanay, Rizal.

“Yung Laiban community, specifically sa Sitio Manggahan, talagang liblib, off-road, bundok, walang kuryente, walang signal,” said Solar Hope founder and president John Mark Napao.

Called Tanglaw 4 Laiban Batch 3, the joint project aimed to provide energy access to Dumagat families in the Laiban community to help them cope with the pandemic and the distance learning modality of education.

Among the beneficiaries are tribe members who will no longer have to go out of their homes at night to study. “May homework ang mga bata pero dahil nga walang ilaw sa kanila, pupunta pa sila sa labas para mag-aral sa tabi ng mga poste na may streetlight,” noted Eufhemia Enciso, Chieftain of Sitio Manggahan.

This concern is echoed by Magatta-Manggahan Elementary School principal Leoncio Soriano, III. He said, “Ang gamit lang nila sa bahay ay gasera at solar flashlight po na hindi sapat para matugunan ang kanilang pangangailangan lalo po pag gabi, lalo sa pag aaral ng mga bata.”

The Solar Hope project is among several corporate social responsibility efforts of Conti’s aimed at providing assistance to underprivileged families. It is particularly aligned with the special focus on education and sustainability which are two of the most important values that the company champions.

“This project gives us a great opportunity to bring delight to the Filipino family beyond serving good food to our customers,” said Patricia Buzon-Chinjen, Conti’s Marketing Head.

“We are beyond glad to be able to quite literally bring light and the benefits it provides to families where they are most needed. When sustainable energy is used to power society the entire community benefits. And when we give people opportunities to better their lives, everybody wins.”
