Philippine Arena to host Game 7 if Kings-Bolts series reaches deciding match

The Philippine Arena will play host to Game 7 of the PBA Governors’ Cup Finals on Sunday, April 24 in the event Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Meralco need a deciding match to dispute the championship of the season-ending conference.

The PBA made the announcement on its social media platforms Thursday, a day after Game 6 was postponed due to a fire that broke out inside the Smart Araneta Coliseum which resulted in the series schedule being pushed further.

PBA commissioner Willie Marcial earlier had discussions with management of the Philippine Arena and the Mall of Asia Arena, which will now host the delayed sixth game Friday, shortly after the Big Dome blaze.

Ginebra, ahead 3-2 in the finals, will try to finish off Meralco and capture a fourth Governors’ Cup crown in the last five editions.

Ultimately, the league was able to assure a playing venue in case the series goes the full distance.

If the title series does go to a Game 7, it will mark the second time that the Philippine Arena was tapped as site of a Ginebra-Meralco decider.

More than 54,000 fans, which remains a PBA record, showed up back in 2017 when Ginebra beat Meralco to claim the Governors’ Cup title.

The PBA last staged a game at the cavernous facility back in Jan. 2019 which saw Ginebra beating TNT to open the 44th season.
