A “very strong” earthquake with a magnitude measuring 6.1 jolted Davao Oriental, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Thursday, April 21.

The quake was traced 82 kilometers (km) southeast of Manay, Davao Oriental around 5:57 a.m. It was tectonic in origin, which means that it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
Meanwhile, in its latest bulletin issued as of 12 p.m., Phivolcs said that the earthquake was “moderately strong” at Intensity IV in Manay, Mati City; Caraga and San Isidro, Davao Oriental.
It was a “weak” tremor in Banganga, Tarragona, and Cateel, Davao Oriental; Davao City; Panabo, Davao del Norte; and Malungon, Sarangani.
The quake was also recorded at Intensity II in Digos City and Hagonoy, Davao del Sur; General Santos City; Tupi; and Tampakan, South Cotabato while it was “scarcely perceptible” at Intensity I in Cagayan de Oro City.
Instrumental Intensity III was also recorded in Malungon, Sarangani; Intensity II in Davao City; Bislig City and General Santos City; while Intensity I was recorded in Kidapawan City.
Phivolcs warned residents of the aforementioned areas to brace for aftershocks due to this quake.
