Cavite expands ICU capacity in key areas amid threat of new Covid-19 surge

CAVITE - The provincial government is gearing up in case of a possible spike in Covid-19 cases in May.

On April 18, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned about the possibility of at least 300,000 active cases by mid-May if the public continues to neglect minimum health and safety protocols.

"It is a warning we are taking seriously. We are still promoting the second wave of boosters and we have expanded our ICU (intensive care unit) capacity in all key areas," Gov. Jonvic Remulla told the Manila Bulletin through a text message on April 19.

Remulla said the second booster drive will be in coordination with the guidelines and vaccine supply from the Department of Health (DOH).

"We expect to go full blast on the second week of May, contingent on supply of course," Remulla said.

As to the key areas where ICU capacity has been expanded, Remulla named Cavite's biggest cities: Bacoor, Imus, and Dasmariñas.

April 19 data from the DOH Center for Health Development Region 4A showed Cavite having 75 active Covid-19 cases, the highest in Calabarzon, followed by Batangas, 42, and Laguna, 23.

According to data from the Cavite Provincial Health Office, most local government units have less than 10 active cases, except for Imus, with 24, and General Trias, with 10 active cases.
