Deschon Winston's 33-point game 'long overdue,' says Pumaren

De La Salle head coach Derrick Pumaren never put pressure on how Deschon Winston should play in the next couple of games in the UAAP Season 84.

After all, Winston is still expected to play the role given to him with or without huge numbers just like his 22-point scoring output in his debut in the Green Archers' 71-66 win over the University of the East Red Warriors last March 26.

And he did not disappoint after breaking out of his shell once more with 33 points on a 14-of-19 shooting including three triples and four rebounds in De La Salle's 112-83 routing of University of Santo Tomas at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Tuesday, April 19.

For Pumaren, his superb performance is actually long overdue.

"I was just expecting anytime that he will be able to get in back into his groove again, and today’s game he showed it again," said the two-time UAAP champion coach.

"Hopefully, he’ll be more consistent these coming games. We will be needing that later on especially itong mga tough games namin ahead of us."

Winston, who had played for US NCAA Division I school Central Michigan University, made heads turn with his precise shooting from mid-range as he finished with 11-of-14 from the perimeter.

The 6-foot-4 guard also scored 19 of his 33 points in the third quarter alone and matched the total scoring output of Far Eastern University's RJ Abarrientos.

He also went perfect from the free throw line and drained a pair of his own.

But the calm and soft-spoken Winston once again deflected the credits to his teammates, noting how De La Salle produced a total of 25 assists -- seven coming from Justine Baltazar and six from Evan Nelle.

Baltazar and Nelle likewise finished with 17 and 16 points, respectively, and gave Winston all the more reason to cite the win as a total team effort.

"I could've not done it without my teammates finding me, getting me good looks and stuff like that, a lot of those catch and shoot and stuff like that," said Winston. "And I just gotta thank my teammate for giving me the ball while I was on fire."
