Pasig City's small infra projects reap rewards

Published Apr 2, 2022 05:30 pm

Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto shared on Friday, April 1, the developments in some of the local government's small infrastructure projects made through the Oplan Kaayusan program. Oplan Kaayusan aims to implement the renovation, rehabilitation, and construction of micro infrastructure at the barangay level.

In a Facebook post, Sotto recalled the first project he and Pasig City Congressman Roman Romulo agreed to undertake.

"Natutuwa ako pag tuwing dumadaan ako ngayon ng Kenneth Road. Nung 2019, ang sabi namin ni Cong. Roman, uunahin namin ito – hindi lang 'yung kalsada na sira-sira 'yung kahabaan ng isang buong lane, kundi pati 'yung drainage, (I feel glad every time I pass by Kenneth Road now. Last 2019, Cong. Roman and I said we will fix this first – not just the whole lane of the broken road, but also the drainage)," Sotto said.

The area had been neglected for a decade, he added.

Through the efforts of the Office of Cong. Romulo and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), they were able to fix the road in just eight months in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Oplan Kaayusan initiates and conducts small projects such as construction of drainage systems and canal lines, upgrading and laying concrete on scarred roads, as well as cleaning and renovating alleys in the inner veins of the city.

Sotto said there are currently 15 ongoing projects in Barangays Nagpayong and Pinagbuhatan, five of which are around 30 percent done, six are 10 to 15 percent, and four are less than 10 percent.

Previously, the mayor said the local government would focus on small infrastructure projects and social service programs.

"Iiwas muna ako sa malalaking infrastructure project...at kaya kung may ipapatayo na bagong building sa Pasig, hangga't maaari ay si Cong. Roman na muna ang bahala para mapondohan ito ng DPWH (For now, I will avoid big infrastructure projects...if we need to build a new building in Pasig, we would let Cong. Roman handle it, so it can be funded by the DPWH)," he said in a Facebook post on March 4.

Sotto said he has plenty of infrastructure plans for 2022 to 2024, now that he has been reforming the procurement and public bidding process as part of his initiative to rid the local government of corruption.

Leaving the system of government officials receiving kickbacks from government funds, they are to increase funds and facilitate its proper allocation in order to invest in the education and health sector, particularly for scholarships and Covid-19 response as well as in aid of the social amelioration program.
