Mayor Sara sweet talks OFWs at UniTeam Miting de Avance

Lakas–Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) vice presidential bet Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte extolled overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) during UniTeam's Miiting de Avance with the sector on Friday night, April 1.

"Sa aking palagay, ang mga OFW na siguro ang pinaka-selfless na uri ng mga manggagawang Filipino. Sila 'yung ang iniisip ay hindi ang kanilang pansariling kaligayahan kundi ang kaligayahan ng kanilang mga mahal sa buhay. Sila 'yung nangangarap hindi para sa kanilang sarili kundi para sa kanilang pamilya (In my opinion, OFWs are the most selfless Filipino worker. They think about the happiness of their loved ones before their own. They dream not for themselves but for their family),” Duterte told OFW voters during a UniTeam miting de avance in Pasay City on Friday, April 1.

One of the UniTeam’s platforms is the strengthening of the recently approved Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), a government body which will see the creation of an online OFW database, regulation of the recruitment and employment of OFWs, blacklisting of recruiters who violate the rights of OFWs, and investigation of cases of illegal recruitment in collaboration with the Department of Justice (DOJ).

“Bilib ako sa tapang nga mga OFWs. Hinaharap ninyo ang lahat ng uri ng panganib sa inyong trabaho. Tinitiis ninyo ang hirap. Balewala sa inyo ang lungkot. At kahit na may sakit, tuloy lang ang trabaho. Walang pahinga. Halos walang day-off. At ginagawa ninyo ito hindi para sa inyong mga sarili, kundi para sa inyong mga pamilya (I'm impressed by the courage of OFWs. You face all the challenges of your job, ignore your sadness, and continue to work even when ill. No rest, no day offs. Not for yourselves but for your families),” she added.

As per the Commission on Elections (Comelec), about 1.7 million OFWs out of a total 1.77 million are eligible to vote in the upcoming May 2022 polls.

OFWs represent about 2.8 percent of all voters, and according to the Comelec there are about 65,745,529 voters registered for the May 9, 2022 polls.

Furthermore, OFWs can begin voting as soon as April 10 by mailing their ballots or physically voting at a Philippine diplomatic outpost or embassy within their respective country.
