DENR, GSIS, industry sector forge ties for Upper Marikina River Basin rehab

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) announced on Saturday, April 2, that it has partnered with the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) and three major firms in the industry sector to intensify the rehabilitation of the Upper Marikina River Basin Protected Landscape (UMRBPL).

In a statement, the DENR said that the five-year agreement mandates GSIS, along with industry sector firms D.M. Consunji Inc. (DMCI), Toyota-Oben Group of Dealers (TOGD), and Meralco Industrial Engineering Services Corporation (MIESCOR), to conserve 70 hectares of ENGP-graduated sites within UMRBPL.

The UMRBPL rehabilitation is under the Expanded National Greening Program (ENGP) — which aims to reforest 1.5 million hectares of denuded forest lands nationwide.

“ENGP-graduated areas are previously established NGP plantations that need assistance from government institutions and private sector partners,” DENR-Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (PENRO) for Rizal Ramil Limpiada said.

“These ENGP-graduated sites are areas turned over to the DENR by the people’s organizations and local government units after fulfilling their three-year site development contracts to raise tree plantations,” he added.

Limpiada explained that the MOA covers GSIS’ commitment to providing funds for the maintenance and protection of 56 hectares within a 1,000-hectare NGP tree plantation and MIESCOR’s adoption of a one-hectare site within a 1,000-hectare ENGP plantation site — both established in 2013.

On the other hand, DMCI and TOGD have adopted 10, and three hectares within a 250-hectare NGP graduated site founded in 2012.

For the funding of rehabilitation activities, GSIS will provide P2.01 million; DMCI will give P360,000; P108,000 from TOGD; and P36,000 from MIESCOR.
