San Sebastian fends off late JRU rally, boosts play-in hopes

San Sebastian overcame a furious rally from Jose Rizal University late in the game to come away with a 70-64 victory in NCAA Season 97 at the La Salle Green Hills Gym on Tuesday, April 19.

The Stags rode the hot hands of JM Calma in the first two quarters but had to fend off a last-ditch effort from the Heavy Bombers inside the final three minutes of the game to pick up their third win in seven games and give their play-in aspirations a huge boost.

Comfortably ahead, 68-56, with a little over three minutes left in the game, San Sebastian found itself in the middle of a JRU uprising, a 7-0 spurt which cut the lead down to just four, 68-64, with 1:31 remaining.

Playing careless in the final minutes, the Stags banked on their defense as they forced Jason Celiz to miss two three-pointers and a floater to keep the breathing space against the rallying Heavy Bombers.

Alex Desoyo then nailed the left-wing mid-range jumper with 59 ticks left which proved to be the dagger for San Sebastian.

Calma unloaded 20 of his 26 points in the first half built on five triples which also went with 11 rebounds and three assists. Rommel Calahat chalked up 13 markers while Desoyo added 10.

“It’s not about their offense and nag matter sa akin, it’s how we stopped JRU kasi alam mo naman yung JRU ang daming firepower so ‘yun yung good thing, it’s not about the offense yung defense is the key factor kung bakit nanalo kami,” said Stags head coach Egay Macaraya.

Celiz carried the load for the Heavy Bombers with 21 points but was the lone bright spot as they dropped to a 1-6 record.

With the win, San Sebastian moved up to the seventh spot of the standings just behind No. 6 Emilio Aguinaldo College which has a 3-3 record. Its last two games are deemed crucial to its playoff hopes as it takes on College of St. Benilde and defending champion Letran as its last assignments.
