Natalie Uy tops women's pole vault at Singapore Open

Natalie Uy showed her readiness in the Southeast Asian Games by topping the women’s pole vault at the 2022 Singapore Open Track and Field Championships Sunday.

Uy dominated the seven-player field by posting 4.20 meters to clinch the gold medal, way ahead of Rachel Yang of Singapore and Esther Tay, who settled for silver and bronze with 3.60m and 3.00m, respectively.

Uy’s feat is close to her golden performance in the 2019 edition, where she established a new Games record of 4.25m.

Katherine Khay Santos also took the spotlight by ruling the women’s long jump by leaping a season-best 5.93m.

She fouled three of her first four attempts before saving her best jump for last to capture the gold medal against silver medalist Roksana Khudoyarova of the European Gold Athletics Club (5.91m) and Marsya Syazwani Mohd Adzhar of the Singapore Sports School (5.09m).

Despite her impressive feat, Santos’ performance is still below the SEAG bronze-medal standard of 6.16m.

Alfrence Braza, meanwhile, bagged his second silver medal in the men’s 5000m with a time of 16 minutes and 47.74 seconds behind eventual winner Subas Gurung of the Wings Athletics Club, who clocked 16:04.44.

His other silver medal came in the men’s 1500m Saturday afternoon.
