Ginebra survives Meralco rally, moves one win away from Govs' Cup title

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel survived a furious rally by Meralco to take a 115-110 win and a 3-2 lead in the PBA Governors’ Cup Finals before an Easter Sunday crowd of 18,251 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Christian Standhardinger scored a pair of crucial baskets while Scottie Thompson hit a long three with 2:16 left as the Gin Kings found some breathing room after the Bolts pulled within one, 98-97, after trailing by a high of 14.
The timely plays of Standhardinger and Thompson enabled Ginebra to move one win from capturing its fourth title in the last five editions of the season-ending conference.
“We did a great job making shots all night,” said Ginebra coach Tim Cone. “I don’t think it was sustainable, but we were able to sustain it for 48 minutes just making big shots.”
Ginebra had two chances to finish it off, beginning Wednesday still at the Big Dome.
Justin Brownlee had 40 points on 13-of-17 shooting, 11 rebounds and five assists to lead a Ginebra attack highlighted by a torrid shooting from beyond the arc.
Thompson produced 19 points, nine rebounds and 11 assists while Standhardinger added 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Arvin Tolentino, whose series got off on a wrong foot when he figured in a heated exchange with Meralco’s Raymar Jose in Game 1, stepped up with 16 points with four triples for the Gin Kings.
Most of the fans that set another record for a sporting event during the pandemic were in ecstasy as Ginebra made 16 three-pointers to set the tone against a Meralco side that struggled all game to find the big breaks.
Meralco’s offense was also struggling to create good opportunities which Ginebra was able to capitalize.
But the Bolts charged back after trailing 96-82 with under eight minutes left with a 14-2 run that cut the Gin Kings’ lead to 98-97 on Aaron Black’s layup, 4 1/2 minutes to go in the contest.
Standhardinger answered with a medium-range jumper, before converting another basket after Ginebra was able to make a stop on the other end to make it a five-point game.
He also grabbed a key offensive rebound that resulted in Thompson, who also did the same prior, knocking a triple from way out for a 105-97 Ginebra advantage.
Import Tony Bishop scored 26 of his 30 points in the second half, Chris Newsome produced 27 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals and Aaron Black set a new career-high with 25 but Meralco now faces a must-win scenario.
Meralco led 22-18 late in the first quarter but allowed Ginebra to go on a 13-0 run stretching the second to trail 31-22. Newsome, however, led a streak of nine consecutive points to even the score at 31-all.
Ginebra’s shooting, however, began to sizzle with Tolentino, Jeff Chan and Nards Pinto knocking down shots that led to a 54-43 lead. Threes by Brownlee and Thompson kept Meralco at bay in the third to stay on top entering the final period.
