QC Jail holds 'senakulo' in observance of Holy Week

In observance of the Holy Week, 47 persons deprived of liberty (PDL) at the Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory (QCJMD) participated in the reenactment of the passion and death of Jesus Christ or “senakulo” inside the jail facility in Kamuning on Good Friday, April 15.

The participants include four members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) community, who played as the female characters.

The senakulo was staged with pre-recorded voice-overs of different biblical passages and events, the QCJMD said.

The play, which lasted for around three hours, was synchronized with the “Stations of the Cross.”

The Stations of the Cross is a 14-step Catholic devotion that commemorates the last days of Jesus Christ on Earth.

The stations focus on specific events of His last days, according to Catholic Online (www.catholic.org). Specific prayers were recited per station until an individual completed the 14 stations.

The senakulo in the jail was voiced by a former PDL resident Disc Jockey (DJ) Marieto Laureno, also known as “Papa Tolits,”

Laureño was a voice over talent at the Welfare and Development Section during his stay at the facility. He was arrested in a buy-bust operation in 2019.

Jail Supt. Michelle Bonto, QCJMD warden, said that Laureño was recently released and he agreed to have his name mentioned as the voice over artist in the senakulo to serve as an inspiration for those who lost track in life.

The PDL actors underwent workshops and rehearsals prior to the senakulo through the guidance of jail personnel.

The QCJMD also conducted different activities during the Holy Week such as “Pagbasa ng Passion,” Palm Sunday Holy Mass, and Washing of the Feet.

They will also hold an “Easter Egg Painting Contest” on Sunday, April 17.
