I still have a hangover from Manila Bulletin's first-ever Uplift Awards, held at the Maynila Ballroom of the Manila Hotel last April 7.
The Manila Bulletin Uplift Awards honors and celebrates individuals and institutions whose efforts to unite, perform, lead, and inspire focused on particular issues that trended and were of utmost importance during the past year.
Hours before the program started, I had conversations with John Arcilla's sister, Maria Gilda San Pedro, and her daughter, Aura Joyce, who received the award on the actor's behalf.
Unfortunately, John wasn't able to attend the event due to the lock-in taping of the blockbuster series "FPJ's Ang Probinsyano" in Ilocos Sur. John and the cast of the popular serye are now taking a holiday break for the Holy Week.
John made sure that his family really made it to the event at the Manila Hotel. So the award-winning actor had a video chat with his sister and his niece. It was really so sweet of John to ask his family to receive the award. Not only that. John delivered a video message for the Manila Bulletin. How I wish other people are like John, who gives utmost importance to organizers of award-giving bodies. He made the Manila Bulletin Uplift Awards really special despite his absence.
In one of our recent media conferences, John told us his closeness to his family. He had dedicated the trophy he won at the 78th Venice Film Festival to his father and two siblings, who passed away in 2021. “I dedicate this award to the members of my family who I lost recently – my father and two siblings. My family plays a big role when it comes to creating my characters. They are my inspiration. They are my No. 1 fans."
“I remember when I won my first Metro Manila Film Festival trophy, one of my siblings immediately went out of the house to break the good news to our relatives and friends. That's how proud he was. My brother and I were perfect friends. My family is so happy for me every time I get recognized as an actor. The same goes for my sister. She's also happy for me. And now she's gone. I know she must be very, very happy for me. Also to our clan, I dedicate this award. We're clannish. Also, to my peers who are happy for me for this recognition," he recalled.
Following his triumph, John said he hopes to conquer the cinema with global projects.“I want to be open to a bigger process. I want to be a global actor. I want to be in that stature where I am ready for global projects."
Arcilla, 55, said that his victory brings hope to the Filipino movie industry.
“It means the whole world to me. It also brings up the dignity of my family. It also brings up the hope of our industry and our fellow Filipino artists, that now we’re being noticed not just as filmmakers but as actors. This will also give way to other Filipino talents."
Maria Gilda and Aura said it was a pleasure receiving the award from the publisher of the Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation Secretary Sonny Coloma. At the start of the program, they requested a souvenir from the successful event – John wanted a poster of the Uplift Awards. Maria Gilda and her daughter were happy to receive the rolled-up poster of the Uplifts Awards for John before they left the hotel.
Again, thank you, John, for being an inspiration! And congratulations on your latest milestone!
