DSWD assures continuous aid for 'Agaton'-hit communities in E. Visayas

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), through its disaster response operations, vowed to continuously coordinate with local government units (LGUs) in order to provide relief assistance and other services to areas affected by tropical depression Agaton (international name: Megi).

To determine ways to address and assess the impact of “Agaton,” in eastern Visayas, the DSWD, together with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), Office of the Civil Defense (OCD), and Region VIII Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (DRRMC) conducted an aerial inspection of the landslide areas in Abuyog, Leyte on Thursday, April 14.

Meanwhile, as part of its disaster response operations, DSWD likewise visited Baybay City in Leyte to identify the needs of residents and “ensure the continued provision of assistance” in the area.

“DSWD led the distribution of family food packs to 36 victims and P10,000 burial assistance each to the five bereaved families of landslide victims in Barangay Bunga,” said DSWD.

The Department has so far provided a total of 5,113 family food packs in the municipalities of Abuyog, Guiuan, and Baybay. This amounts to more than P3.4 million and it aims to support “Agaton”-hit LGUs, said DSWD.

“The DSWD, through its Field Office VIII, continues to coordinate with concerned LGUs for the provision of relief assistance and other services for their affected constituents,” it added.
