Thompson, Brownlee in prime position to win Govs' Cup individual awards

Scottie Thompson and Justin Brownlee are expected to have their names called as winners of the two individual awards that will be handed out before Game 4 of the PBA Governors’ Cup Finals.

Ginebra fans expected to attend the 6 p.m. contest at the Smart Araneta Coliseum are hoping to see Thompson getting the Best Player of the Conference award and Brownlee as Best Import.

Both players put themselves in position at the end of the semifinals, with Thompson climbing to second in statistical points behind NorthPort’s Robert Bolick.

Bolick’s failure to lead NorthPort to the quarterfinals will weigh heavily in the decision on voters composed of the media, players and the PBA Commissioner’s Office.

Thompson has never won a BPC since his pro debut in the 2015-16 season, his biggest award at this point is a Finals Most Valuable Player in the 2018 Commissioners’ Cup.

It was the same conference that Brownlee won his Best Import plum, and it appears that the Gin Kings’ resident import will finally get one in the said conference.

Brownlee has fallen short thrice for the best foreign player award of the Governors’ Cup, as Allen Durham won on all occasions in 2016, 2017 and 2019 when he was still with Meralco.

Other nominees for the BPC are Phoenix Super LPG’s Matthew Wright, TNT’s Mikey Williams and NorthPort’s Arwind Santos while Magnolia Pambansang Manok’s Mike Harris, Meralco’s Tony Bishop and NLEX’s Cam Clark are also in the running for the Best Import.
