N. Iloilo residents take refuge on rooftops as flood rises

ILOILO CITY -- With the continuous rain spawned by tropical depression “Agaton”, residents in low lying areas of northern Iloilo province had to climb to their rooftops as floodwaters kept rising.

Residents and their families even made their appeal for help through online on Monday, April 11.

This was particularly for the residents of Tipacla People’s Village, which is the relocation site built by the National Housing Authority (NHA) for survivors of super typhoon Yolanda last November 2013.

“Basa na tanan nga gamit. Ginakurog na sila. Ang pamilya ko, please kag iban nga pamuluyo. Taas na ang tubig (Their belongings are wet. They are shaking. Please help my family and the other residents),” urged Taryna Cabangal Oquias via a Facebook post.

Gezalyn E. Montibano posted a 30-second video on Facebook that shows she, three other members of her family, and their dog on their rooftop as floodwaters rose above six feet. The video also showed some of their neighbors also on rooftops.

Similarly, residents of neighboring Lemery and Sara were climbing to their rooftops.

Many national roads were also flooded in northern Iloilo province.

A Ceres bus carrying passengers to Carles tipped sideways while trying to traverse a flooded road in Ajuy town. No one was reported injured.

Jerry Bionat, chief of the Iloilo Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (Iloilo PDRRMO), has yet to give detailed reports on the incidents caused by tropical storm ‘Agaton’.
