'Agaton' weakens into tropical depression; public vigilance urged

Malacañang called on the public to remain alert and take precautionary measures as Tropical Depression Agaton continues to move slowly in the country.

Communications Secretary Martin Andanar made the statement after "Agaton" at least left one person dead, one missing, and two others injured on Sunday, April 10, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

On Monday morning, Andanar said that the Executive Department is all hands in monitoring "Agaton," which weakened into a tropical depression on April 11, as reported by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

"The Office of the President is closely monitoring the track of Tropical Storm Agaton as government's hands are on deck to assist affected residents," he said.

"The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council is coordinating with the disaster councils of affected areas to support relief activities," he added.

However, the acting Palace spokesman asked the public to remain vigilant and updated about the movement of the tropical depression.

"Muli kaming nananawagan sa publiko, lalo na sa mga lugar na naapektuhan ng bagyo, na magsagawa ng kinakailangan precautionary measures (We renew our appeal to the public, especially those in areas affected by the typhoon, to conduct the necessary precautionary measures)," Andanar said.

"Magbasa at manuod ng pinakabagong weather advisories at bulletins. Makipag-ugnayan at makipagtulungan sa mga otoridad kung kinakailangan ng paglikas sa inyong mga lugar. Manatiling ligtas ang lahat (Stay up-to-date on the latest weather advisories and bulletins. Coordinate with the local authorities if you need to evacuate. Stay safe)," he added.

As of 8 a.m. on April 11, there are 201 affected barangays with 3,717 displaced families inside 71 evacuation centers in Region 6, Region 7, Region 8, Region 10, Region 11, Region 12, CARAGA, and BARMM.

Meanwhile, 15 cities and municipalities experienced power interruption/shortage. The power supply in four cities and municipalities was already restored.
