Pasig PIO to implement stricter security measures after social media account hack
The Pasig City Public Information Office (PIO) said on Sunday, April 10, that they will implement stricter security measures in their social media pages after the PIO's Twitter account was hacked on Saturday night, April 9.
"Moving forward, the Pasig City PIO has instituted mechanisms concerning the strict and limited access to this account to ensure that future hacking incidents such as this will be avoided," the PIO said in a statement released on their Facebook page.
The hacking incident occurred at around 10 p.m. on April 9. The official Pasig PIO account (@PasigInfo) was renamed to "Pasig.eth".
The bio description also changed to read: "Co-founder of @AzukiOfficial / @chirulabs. [email protected]. Former Character Art Director for @playOverwatch. Pixel Art Enthusiast."
The account was littered with some 84,000 tweets, promoting digital content, specifically non-fungible tokens (NFTs), and tagging multiple random user accounts in their posts.
According to the statement, they were able to retrieve the account at 7:30 a.m, with the aid of Sei Salvador from @TwitterGov who granted their request for access.
However, efforts to clean the account and delete the tweets left by the unidentified hacker are on-going.
The PIO also apologized to the owners of the accounts that were tagged by the hacker.
The Pasig City government extended its gratitude to Twitter users who immediately flagged the hacked account and informed them of the incident.
The Pasig PIO Twitter account was previously hacked on April 17, 2020, wherein malicious content was reportedly posted by the hacker. The account was restored quickly after.
