Expert stresses importance of vaccinating children with cancer vs Covid-19
A health expert stressed on Friday, April 1, the importance of vaccinating children with cancer against Covid-19, reiterating the protection offered by vaccines to immunocompromised kids.

In a virtual forum hosted by the University of the Philippines (UP), Dr. Patricia Alcasabas, head of the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at the UP-Philippine General Hospital, said 5,200 Filipino children get cancer each year, and vaccinating them against the viral illness would protect them.
"Sa simula't simula pa lang po ng pandemic pinapakita na ang mga bata na may comorbidities ang unang natatamaan ng Covid (From the very beginning of the pandemic, it has been shown that children with comorbidities are the first to be affected by Covid)," Alcasabas said.
"Ang mga bata pong may cancer, ang Covid po nila ay mas malala (Children with cancer experience more severe Covid)," she added, noting that cancer survivors are also at risk for severe Covid-19.
Alcasabas said that the timing of vaccination should be discussed with the child's oncologists and hematologists first.
She also recommended giving a third dose of mRNA vaccine to children with cancer. Both the Pfizer-BioNTech and the Moderna Covid-19 vaccines use mRNA.
Family members and close cohabitants are also recommended to get a third dose, Alcasabas added.
"Bakit ang batang may cancer ay dapat talagang bigyan ng vaccination? Dahil sila po ay at risk for severe Covid and complications at napuputol po ang kanilang gamutan sa cancer at dahil dito, baka sila mag-relapse agad (Why should a child with cancer get vaccinated? Because they are at risk for severe Covid and complications and their cancer treatment is interrupted, because of this, they may relapse)," she stressed.
