All-new Avanza has 7 seating configurations

Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) makes way for the all-new 2022 Avanza multi-purpose vehicle and retires the second-generation model, which has been in the market for 10 years.

The latest Avanza gets a major exterior makeover, its interior overhauled, plus it gets new safety features and creature comforts. It shifts slightly from being purely a commercial vehicle to a model that also caters to young families.

“The Philippines loves commercial vehicles or CVs. Through the years, MPVs have served as a practical choice for the day-to-day needs of Filipino families. And we love giving our customers choices! That is why, we are reintroducing our reliable, tried-and-tested model in the compact MPV segment. I am sure this full model change of this well-loved family car will bring more happiness for all,” said TMP President Atsuhiro Okamoto.

One of the biggest changes in this model is its layout. The Avanza is now a front-wheel-drive unit thanks to the new platform from Toyota subsidiary, Daihatsu. It also upgrades from a semi-monocoque to a full monocoque chassis to reduce weight, improve handling, and increase ride comfort.

It also gets bigger. The third-generation model is 205 mm longer, 70 mm wider, and 5 mm taller. That equates to a longer wheelbase; now at 2,750, which is 95 more than its predecessor.

The façade’s ‘Keen Look’ has a more horizontal layout and a much wider hexagonal grille that almost stretches to all four corners. It now gets thinner split-type LED headlamps.

Inside it gets an all-new dashboard, a fresh set of two-tone seat material, and more importantly, has one of the most seating configurations of any MPV with seven. That includes a Long Sofa mode so the family can relax with their feet up while sitting in the third row.

G and E variants have auto-fold side mirrors, an eight-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and even USB charging ports at the rear. Safety features for these grades include a back camera and a back sensor. Exclusive to the G variant are a push-start button system, a 4.2-inch TFT multi-information display, blind-spot monitoring and rear camera traffic alert, vehicle stability control, and six SRS airbags.

Two different Dual VVT-i (variable valve timing) engines power the Avanza. The first of the two is a smaller 1.3-liter that produces 98-PS and 122-Nm of torque. The larger engine is a 1.5-liter with an output of 106-PS with 138-Nm of torque. The J and E variants are paired to a five-speed manual while the G and E use a new continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Get the 2022 Avanza in either Black Metallic, Silver Metallic, White (J only), Dark Red Mica Metallic (G and E only), and Greenish Gun Metal (G and E only).

While TMP aims to sell 1,500 Avanzas per month, president Atsuhiro Okamoto has stated that they have reduced that number to 1,000 units per month due to the global semiconductor shortage. While the original number looks big, know that the Avanza averaged close to 1,300 models per month in 2017, with a five-year-old model.

If you’re in the market for an MPV, or the Avanza specifically, know that stocks are limited right now. Call to test drive or reserve to secure your unit.

The price of the 2022 Toyota Avanza starts at P813,000 for the 1.3 J MT; P928,000 for the 1.3 E MT; P984,000 for the 1.3 E CVT; and P1,039,000 for the 1.5 G CVT.
