Gov't approves P72M worth of infra projects in 18 rebel-cleared barangays in Cagayan

The national government has approved the P72 million worth of development projects in 18 barangays in Cagayan as part of initiatives to download programs and projects in areas used to be infested by communist rebels.

The fund will finance the 22 proposed infrastructure projects under the Local Government Support Fund-Support to Barangay Development Program (LGSF-SBDP) in 18 barangays in the towns of in the towns of Allacapan, Baggao, Lasam, Lallo, Rizal and Sto. Niño.

These barangays were declared communist-terrorist group (CTG)-free based on the Community Support Program (CSP) conducted by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Of the 22 projects, 13 of them were for the upgrading and construction of farm-to-market roads, three for construction of health stations, two for rural electrification and four for the construction and improvement of the water system.

The endorsed barangays underwent Retooled Community Support Program (RCSP), a mechanism for barangays to identify issues and the appropriate intervention of the government, after which, the barangays shall identify projects for funding through the community, stakeholders, and other national government agencies.

A flagship project of the Department of the Interior and Local Government, the SBDP is an offshoot of Executive Order No. 70, which aims to achieve inclusive and sustainable peace and development by ending local communist armed conflict through a whole-of-nation approach.

It provides funding to priority projects and programs to communities previously infiltrated by the communist terrorist groups (CTGs).

“Each identified barangay is a recipient of P4 million worth of projects,’’ the DILG Cagayan noted.

The validation and consultation are preparatory activities for the implementation of the support program in the province.

The validation team is composed of the DILG Provincial Project Development Management Unit, Local Government Operations Officer (LGOO) VII Ricardo Torrado, LGOO VII Cristina B. Somera, and the respective Municipal LGOOs (MLGOOs) of the concerned local government units and representatives from the Provincial Government of Cagayan. (Chito A. Chavez)
