Filipinas craft women's electoral agenda

A total of 200 Filipino women represented their respective sectors on Sunday, March 6, in crafting the women's electoral agenda during the 2022 National Women's Summit.

Among the women's organization present were GABRIELA, Center for Women's Resources, Babae Bantayan ang Eleksyon, GABRIELA-Youth, Kilusan ng Manggagawang Kababaihan, Amihan-National Federation of Peasant Women, BAI Indigenous Women, Girls for Peace, and Bahaghari.

During the summit, the organizations presented an electoral agenda covering issues on the pandemic and economic crisis; health services; livelihood, transportation, social services, education, public utilities, and mental health.

"Dapat malaking para sa kalusugan at tsaka yung pagpapatupad ng universal health program, hindi yung tulad nung universal health program ngayon na nakadikit sa Philhealth na punung-puno naman ngayon ng napakaraming anomalya (There should be a big subsidy for health and also the implementation of the universal health program, not the current one now that's attached to Philhealth which is now full of anomalies)," GABRIELA Chairperson Gert Libang said.

"Comprehensive dapat yung medical, scientific at medical yung solusyon na ibibigay doon sa Covid-19 kasi alam natin ngayon na yung solusyon ng gobyerno, napaka-militaristic (Address Covid-19 through comprehensive solutions which are medical and scientific. Because as we know, the government's solution now is very militaristic)," Libang added as she renewed the call for mass testing and an efficient contact tracing system.

The groups likewise demanded for human rights, peace, and social justice, as well as an end to discrimination and violence against women and children.

"Dapat yung mga organisasyon na nagsisilbi ay hindi tinitingnan bilang kaaway ng estado o kaya yung mga tao na nagbibigay ng kanilang komento o kritisismo ay wag tingnan na kaaway ng estado (The organizations that serve the public should not be viewed as enemies of the state and the people who give comments or criticism should not be viewed as enemies of the state)," she underscored.

"Sana magkaraoon ng mas mahusay na serbisyo para sa mga biktima ng violence against women, sana hindi makaranas ng diskriminasyon ang kababaihan at LGBTQ . Ang kanilang karapatan ay protektahan din (Hopefully there will be better services for victims of violence against women and LGBTQ. Our rights should also be protected)," Libang said.

Moreover, the organizations also called for the protection of the national sovereignty and democracy, and the environment; and clamored for genuine land reform and national industrialization, and disaster preparedness.
