A drive with Honda SENSING

With the many dangers on the road, it’s imperative for drivers today to stay attentive and be ready to drive defensively to avoid incident. However, it’s not easy with so many potential obstacles as well as distractions when driving.

As such, Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) wants to provide drivers a helping hand in the form of the Honda SENSING suite. The safety feature package is fitted as standard on the current 11th generation all-new Honda Civic and is designed to serve as an extra pair of eyes on the road.

To demonstrate exactly what it’s capable of, Honda invited members of the media to a test drive to sample these technologies in a real-world situation. The event observed all current health and safety protocols to ensure staff and participants were safe.

Present was a lineup of six units of the all-new Civic, composed of variants like the S Turbo, V Turbo, and RS Turbo. The route entailed driving through the bustling streets of Metro Manila to the picturesque winding roads and open fields of Tagaytay and Nasubgu, Batangas.

The Civic sports a brand new look with a blend of elegance and sportiness complemented by its sleek character lines. All variants are powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder DOHC VTEC Turbo paired to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

In pursuit of Honda’s mission of a collision-free society, the Honda SENSING suite is now standard in all variants of the Civic. The test drive event involved exercises to showcase the different functions of the Honda SENSING.

During the highway drive, participants were able to test the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which aims to make highway drives a more pleasant experience by maintaining the speed based on the car in front of you. It comes with automatic braking and acceleration to maintain the gap even when the speed changes. Assisting it is the Low-Speed Follow (LSF) function, which makes continues to work even when traffic has slowed. Its other feature, Lead Car Departure Notification System (LCDN), alerts the driver when the car in front has moved ahead from a standstill. These features combine to help keep the driver attentive whether on the highway or stop-and-go traffic. It’s a perfect feature for those that go through pure highway or even mixed driving, making the EDSA rush-hour crawl a little more bearable.

Another feature we got to try was the Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) with Road Departure Mitigation System and Lane Departure Warning (RDM with LDW). These systems watch the road for lane markings. They gently turn the steering wheel to keep the vehicle in the center of its lane. It also vibrates the wheel flashing an icon if it senses the car departing the lane without the use of turn signals. It even encourages considerate driving by turning off the warnings and vibrations if the driver uses turn signals to change lanes.

Finally, there’s the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) which warns and helps the driver avoid a frontal collision or at least reduce the severity. It watches the vehicle ahead and will also automatically apply the brakes when necessary. The audible alarm will stop once the system detects that there is no more risk of collision.

Over the course of the exercises, it showed that the suite is capable of assisting the driver even in the midst of the chaotic traffic of the Philippines. The aids are quiet, gentle and hardly intrusive. They’re almost supernatural in how good they are in detecting dangers, it almost feels like you’ve got a guardian angel holding the wheel and working the pedals with you.

For new drivers, experienced ones, or those advanced in their years, the Civic with Honda SENSING can easily make the any drive more relaxing and enjoyable. And thanks to this high-tech guardian angel, any drive is also made far safer.
