Not secure enough? Bongbong worries over identity theft via national ID

Aspiring president Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has called for the protection of Filipinos against identity theft through the misuse of the national identification system, which had just been rolled out.

While he acknowledged the importance of a unified national ID system, Marcos Jr. said the government must ensure the public of enough protection against identity theft and other forms of cybercrimes.

This came as he expressed concern that the national ID lacks the necessary security features after one of his staff managed to scan using a mobile phone the QR code on the back of the ID.

"Marami na tayong bagong technology ngayon, baka puwedeng mas epektibo at mas secured pa (We have new technology now. Maybe we can install a more effective and secured feature)," he said.

Marcos Jr. proposed that the national ID must have a radio frequency identification (RFID) instead of the rather ubiquitous QR code.
