Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) vice presidential candidate Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio says that she proposed the use of nuclear energy 12 years prior to President Duterte’s signing of Executive Order (EO) No. 164 favoring a Philippine nuclear energy program.

"Noong mayor ako, 2010, na nagkaka-problema po tayo, mayroon pong energy crisis doon sa Mindanao, as a regional development council chairperson, isa po 'yan talaga sa sinuggest ko sa national government na gawin nila (When I was Mayor in 2010, we had an energy crisis. As the regional development council chairperson, I suggested the use of nuclear energy to the national government)," the younger Duterte said during a press interview in Navotas City on Friday, March 4.

Mayor Sara, whose previous tenure as Davao City mayor lasted from 2010 to 2013, was referring to the previous administration of President Benigno S. Aquino III, which lasted from 2010 to 2016.

She said she is in support of her father’s signing of EO No.164 as she believes that going nuclear will launch an industrial boom in the country and potentially solve all of its energy problems.

“If you want industrialization dito sa ating bansa (in our country} and we want more investments na pumasok at maraming mag-negosyo dito, syempre tataas po 'yung pangangailangan natin sa energy (to come in and more business to open, then our need for energy will increase),” Mayor Sara explained.

“Yan po ang isa sa mga pinakamabilis na pagbibigay ng solusyon (This is the fastest solution),” she concluded.

President Duterte signed, on Feb. 28, EO No.164 which outlines the national government’s plan to establish a nuclear energy program.
