Fatigue, hair loss, attention disorder among 'common manifestations' of long Covid, says expert

The “most common manifestations” of patients who have had long Covid-19 include headache, fatigue, attention disorder, hair loss, and dyspnea, a health expert said on Friday, March 4.

Long Covid-19 is the persistence of signs and symptoms experienced by 10 percent to 20 percent of patients after they have recovered from the disease.

Citing Dr. Vismita Gupta-Smith of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Camilo Roa, professor at the University of the Philippines (UP) College of Medicine, explained what long Covid-19 is.

“If you have recovered from Covid-19 but are still experiencing some symptoms, you could have what is known as post-Covid condition. This is also referred to as “long Covid” sometimes,” said Roa in a webinar held by UP.

The manifestations, according to Roa, may vary from “something we can see and do not see.” Among the manifestations were fatigue, breathlessness, brain fog, confusion, and forgetfulness.

However, based on scientific reports, the “most common” manifestations include fatigue, headache, attention disorder, hair loss, and dyspnea.

According to Roa, these were “mostly noticed” only after recovery.

“It may have started during the Covid-19 illness but most symptoms were only noticed after recovery. In , the symptoms are relapsing — a patient gets better, then worse again,” said Roa.

The recovery from the said condition may likewise vary. Some patients recover fast, while most experience a medium or “very long” duration of recovery that could reach to more than six months, Roa added.
