Basic Energy to deploy 3,000 e-buses

Listed firm Basic Energy Corporation (BSC) is scaling up its deployment of electric buses (e-buses) for a rollout target of 3,000 fleet in the near to medium-term for its “green energy e-transport” project.

The company said it will start with the deployment of at least 60 e-buses that shall be done in parallel with its solar venture with gas retail stations that will cater to electric vehicles.

“BSC aims to target the solarization of an initial 30 out of the 1,500 planned retail station sites coupled with complementary operation of around 60 out of the 3,000 basic e-buses,” the company noted.

For its solar-powered stations, the firm indicated that several oil companies have already expressed interest “and have agreed to proceed with further discussions on the terms and conditions of the joint venture.”

Part of the negotiations with prospective oil firm-partners are: determination of prospective sites; target to proceed with pilot installations; as well as commencement of feasibility studies and data gathering.

In the roll of oil companies that Basic Energy has been in discussion with for the green transport venture are French firm Total and EcoOil plus Filpride-USA88 of the Villavicencio group.

For the initial deployment of e-buses and solar installations at its retail stations, Basic Energy emphasized that preliminary capital spending allotment had been set at P40 million.

“The green energy e-transport project is BSC’s ambitious endeavor in pursuit of its vision to become a major instrument in the country’s drive for energy self-sufficiency by providing clean, efficient, and reliable energy sources,” the company stressed.

It further pointed out that this investment trajectory is “align with the Philippines’ push to introduce the use and advocacy of e-vehicles and e-transport systems to lessen the country’s carbon footprint and promote the protection of the environment.”

Greening and electrifying the transport sector had been among the anchors identified by climate scientists that could aid the world in meeting the 1.5 degrees C limit on temperature warning.

In the Philippines, the policy and regulatory frameworks for electric mobility are still being firmed up; but several investors - including Basic Energy – are already advancing investment initiatives on this sphere.
