Baldwin dismisses possible 30-game win streak, shifts focus to De La Salle showdown

Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin dismissed the possible scenario of the Blue Eagles soaring to a 30-game win streak since 2018 when they clash with the De La Salle Archers in the UAAP Season 84 on Saturday, April 2.

Baldwin kept it as practical as possible and emphasized that his wards will march on one game at a time, without thinking much about records and the likes.
"We really believe in preparation. To us, there's no such thing as a 30-game winning streak," said Baldwin after Ateneo's 78-47 routing of Adamson Thursday, March 31 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
"That's for guys in the media, for people like to hype stories that don't really matter to our team. What really matters is to prepare and play against La Salle," added the three-time UAAP champion.
Focus would be on the Taft-based squad as Ateneo and De La Salle were the remaining unbeaten teams in the UAAP with a share of a 3-0 lead on the leaderboard.
The classic showdown, set at 7 p.m. to cap off the quadruple-header, also draws another storyline as Ange Kouame, Dave Ildefonso, and SJ Belangel take on Gilas Pilipinas teammate Justine Baltazar.
"Those kinds of things take care of themselves. Those stories that you guys generate around the basketball team , they don't get within our team. We don't want them. We're not interested in them," added Baldwin.
But the former Gilas Pilipinas tactician is crystal clear that "good things happen when you keep preparing, playing to win games."
The 63-year-old Baldwin, leaving the past games behind, just wanted to make sure that there should be no room for complacency in the league.
Moving forward, the American-Kiwi tactician also took notice of the long run as far as the Eagles are concerned.
"Our job as a coaching staff of Ateneo is to help our players become successful individual basketball players and in doing that having a successful basketball program. It's as simple as that. That's what we do."
